The biggest royal wedding since Prince Charles married Princess Diana will take place next year when their son, Prince William, marries his girlfriend of eight years Kate Middleton.

“The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton,” an official statement released on Tuesday said. “The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.”

William proposed to Kate in October while vacationing in Kenya. Before the trip, he informed The Queen of his intentions and asked Middleton’s father for permission.
