Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his late mother Princess Diana’s engagement ring.

The historic piece of jewelry is an oval blue 18-carat sapphire surrounded by 14 smaller white diamonds.

“It is very special to me,” William said at a press conference at St James’ Palace on Tuesday where Kate showed off the ring. “It was my way to make sure my mother did not miss out on today and the excitement that we are going to spend the rest of our lives together.”

William’s father, Prince Charles, proposed to Diana with the ring in February of 1981. It was originally priced at $65,000.
