Jennifer Hudson, who got engaged to David Otunga on her birthday, September 12, was recently on “The Tonight Show” and shared details of the romantic proposal, which came as a complete surprise.

Hudson explained, “I had no clue at all. We went to the beach during the day, and he blindfolded me and he gave me a purple shovel, because purple’s my favourite color, and I had to dig. I ended up digging through all this sand. When I found it, it was like a bunch of beautiful cards, one related to the other, and the last one said ‘Look around, take the moment in, turn around and I have a gift for you.’”

The gift she received was a platinum Neil Lane engagement ring with five-carat center stone.

The couple, who have been dating for less than a year, have not announced a wedding date.
