David Letterman will announce on his talk show Monday night that he married his longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko on March 19.
The wedding took place in Choteau, Montana in front of a justice of the peace at Teton County Courthouse. The couple’s five-year-old son Harry was in attendance.
“Regina and I began dating in February of 1986,” Letterman told his audience at Monday night’s taping. “I said, ‘Well, things are going pretty good, let’s just see what happens in about ten years.’”
23 years later, the couple decided to tie the knot. On the way to the courthouse, however, their truck got stuck in the mud. Letterman began to wonder if fate was telling him not to get married.
“So now we think: Well, somebody’ll come,” Letterman explained. “No, nobody … comes along. No, nobody – so I get out of the truck and I walk two miles back to the house into a 50 mile per hour. It’s not Beverly Hills, it’s Montana, for God’s sakes. And the whole way, I’m thinking: See, smart ass, see, see, you try to get married, this is what happens.”
When Dave arrived back with the other car to pick up his family, Harry asked if they were still going into town. “And I said, ‘Yes, we are,’” Letterman recounts, “and he gets very upset because mom had told him if I wasn’t back in an hour, the deal was off.”
